Set in late-1800’s New York, this beautifully shot (and I repeat: Beautifully shot) film tells the story of a reserved, proper lawyer (Daniel Day-Lewis) whose engaged to equally reserved and proper May (Winona Ryder) but falls for May’s free-spirited cousin (Michelle Pfieffer). Imprisoned deeply inside the invisible cage of social convention, Day-Lewis leaves the passion for the cousin to simmer beneath the surface, as a trained smile politely plays across his face. Proving it’s not how far you go, just as long as it’s a little more than allowed, watch for a scene where Day-Lewis kisses Pfieffer’s exposed wrist. Talk about sensual, sexual and erotic.
