The Birdcage:
A remake of the French movie “La Cage Aux Folles,” the story involves the son of a gay, Jewish couple, Armand and Albert, who own a drag club (Armand had a brief fling with a woman in college) marrying the daughter of extreme right-wing senator, Kevin Keeley (Hackman). To help you understand how extreme, he refers to Bob Dole as “too liberal.”
Murphy’s Law ensues when Armand and Albert prepare for the Keeley’s arrival by hiding their Jewish ancestry, their homosexuality, and the fact the son’s “mom” is actually Albert in drag.
Two great scenes: When both families sing and dance to “I Could Have Danced All Night” and Hackman going on and on...and on about the foliage they saw on the drive down.
A breakout performance by Hank Azaria as Armand and Albert’s houseboy, Agador.
(Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Diane Weist, Calista Flockhart, Hank Azaria, and Dan Futterman – who wrote the screenplay for the exceptional “Capote,” his first one ever. Amazing)
